The Learning & Development Officer will work together to identify training needs with the individual and their team leader to plan the appropriate course to meet their specific training need. We encourage a learning environment for all staff, we believe learning by doing is important to widen participation and encourage personal and professional development.
Householders, families and advocates need to know that staff are appropriately trained to develop lifestyles, meet personal needs and improve the quality of service.
While respecting and valuing diversity and difference in staff's needs and abilities, we acknowledge these and will always ensure that there is equal access to training. As an organisation we recognise that individual learning styles vary and courses are not appropriate for all, and we will strive to offer a wide variety of training opportunities to individuals who work in the ELT.
Evidence shows that a structured induction process, along with professional development, play a significant part in the retention of staff. The structured induction process which all new staff follow, also includes attending several courses, some of which are refreshed every 3 years. Staff are always supported by their Team Leader and the Training Department to make this process as smooth and as interesting as possible. The induction procedure and the compulsory courses are
- Supporting people with a learning disability (LDQ)
- The New Common Induction Standards (designed to provide a structured start for workers in the first 12 weeks of their employment)
- An in-service induction into the service they will work
- Mandatory training:-
- Moving and Handling
- Fire Safety
- Food Hygiene
- Health and Safety
- Handling Medication in Social Care Settings
- Protection of Vulnerable Adults (POVA)
- Emergency First Aid at Work
On completion of a successful probationary period staff will then be supported to gain NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care.
New team Leaders and Managers will follow the new Social Care Management Induction Standards when they are finalised and implemented by Skills for Care. They will also follow the in-service Monthly Management Training Programme where skills are up-dated and developed. They will be expected after gaining experience to complete NVQ 4 in Management
Health and Safety
The ELT are aware and actively involved in Health and Safety training for all staff. All service houses have a Health and Safety Representative. Annual H&S and Risk Assessment training is given to ensure that the Householders and all members of staff are safe from all hazards and risks. This is delivered by a Health and Safety Consultant who oversees the training and standards of all the service's H&S reps
Computer Training
To support staff to gain computer skills, the ELT holds regular training sessions. This takes place in a relaxed and friendly setting to ensure that staff feel more at ease, which aids the learning process.
Before each session, a Training Needs Analysis is carried out on all staff who would like to attend. This tells us what level of skill (such as switching the computer on, opening files or starting up programmes) to more advanced skills (PowerPoint presentations, Excel and Outlook systems).
