Saturday Club

This is a weekly club for disabled children aged 8-14 years, based in Newcastle.  It has been running since 2002.  The Club provides a wide range of exciting activities including arts and crafts, videos and computer games, playing team games, using the outside area, music and dance, and water games.  There are indoor and outdoor sports and occasional day trips and special events.  The Saturday Club also use other community venues when our usual venue isn’t available. The club is thoroughly enjoyed by all the children who attend.

There are currently 27 children who attend the Saturday Club.  Twelve of these children have their places funded through Newcastle Council Children’s Services, six are funded through support from BBC Children in Need.  The others are funded through individual contracts and Direct Payments.

The project was set up as families said there were minimal activities in Newcastle for children with disabilities, at the weekend. There are over a thousand children and young people who live in Newcastle who have been identified as having special needs.

Weekends are usually places where children and young people want to meet their friends, who may not be at school with them, and spend time away from their families. These children and young people do not have access to the same levels of creative and social opportunities as those able to use mainstream facilities in Newcastle.
