Supported Living

The Trust supports tenants who have learning disabilities to run their house or flat, wherever they live by themselves or with one or two housemates. Teams of staff provide 1:1 support to the tenants 'around the clock' or for as little as 10 hours a week. All the properties in Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland are rented by the tenants from a variety of Housing Associations.

Our staff can provide social care (i.e. support to live the lifestyle each person aspires to) and housing-related advice and support (i.e. paying the rent, decorating, gardening) as well as personal care (i.e. washing, bathing).

We encourage each tenant to create their own 'circle of support', a collection of family, friends and significant others' who meet up with them throughout the year. Their role is to listen to the person and to help them put their plans for the future into action...whether their interests lie in developing friendships and relationships, moving to a new flat, finding a part-time job in their local area or getting a bit fitter!

We can help people who live in their own homes, or maybe with their families, to get out and about and do activities they enjoy. We support an increasing number of people this way and some of these services are funded by Direct Payments, Independent Living Fund and Individual Budgets.

We also run a small residential care home, in the west end of Newcastle. There are currently four residents living here.

We will help people to do whatever is in their plan.  It depends on the person – not us. Just to give some examples, we help people to:

- Go to discos, parties, concerts and special events
- Take part in swimming, football, climbing, bowling
- Go on holiday – Majorca, Scotland and visit the Emmerdale set
- Support people to do courses in cookery, drama, woodwork, art
- Do everyday things such as shopping, cleaning, going to the pub
- Do voluntary activities – in the poodle parlour, community drop-in
